Project value: £3,200,000
Project size: 20,000+ sq ft
This iconic Grade II listed building is on the banks of the River Ouse in the centre of York. Previously, it was used as a nightclub, but having been derelict for several years it was flood damaged and in a severe state of disrepair.
We were commissioned as lead designer on a project to refurbish and extend this historically significant building.
What we did
We collaborated with developers Grantside and many specialist sub-contractors to create a contemporary, multiuse development that would be sustainable for the future. It incorporated luxury residential apartments as well as high quality commercial office accommodation.
We also worked closely with City of York Council and English Heritage to overcome several complex conservation and planning issues, while preserving the building’s historic fabric and features.
To provide an effective flood defence system, we coordinated civil and structural engineering specialists. And, to ensure strong uptake of the space, we create a brand identity for the development. This new brand played out in the interior design scheme, signage and marketing collateral.
This successful combination of historic refurbishment and new build development has won several accolades and awards including BCO Best Refurbished/Recycled Workplace. It’s also attracted fresh business to the city centre, and is home to York’s first £1m penthouse.
